On location

Providing you with the very best seafood is the focus of all our efforts, but to do that, Cumbrian Seafoods would be nothing without the enthusiasm and commitment of our staff and access to the world class facilities we work in. That’s why we are a “people business”, one that relies on the experience, expertise, tradition, knowledge, energy and passion of all those who are part of our team.

Cumbrian Holdings Ltd, which owns the businesses making up Cumbrian Seafoods, is a fully resourced, thriving, efficient, family business and a team–orientated employer. Just as we invest in our staff through training and development programmes, we are similarly continuously investing in and upgrading our office and processing sites.

The business, which was established at Maryport, Cumbria in 1997, has successfully grown in size. After the formation of Cumbrian Holdings Ltd in April 2001, the group acquired Cumberland Cold Storage, now renamed Cumbrian Seafoods (Whitehaven), and then Border Laird in Northumberland. Further investment has come in the form of Cumbrian Seafoods’ main facility and head office at Seaham, County Durham where we have invested £20m in order to put us at the forefront of independent seafood suppliers.

Cumbrian Seafoods, Seaham

Our world class factory at the Foxcover Enterprise Park, Seaham, became operational in 2007 after an initial £18m investment. The site was selected because it is in a prime location to attract a skilled, experienced workforce and is adjacent to major trunk roads delivering good product distribution efficiencies. Its landscaped gardens identify it as being at the forefront of the group’s environmentally friendly approach, which includes many renewable energy initiatives to help ensure Seaham’s eventual Carbon Neutral position.

Cumbrian Seafoods, Whitehaven

Cumbrian Seafoods’ Whitehaven site, 15 miles south of Maryport, is a primary processor and smoker of both pelagic and demersal fish. It has hot and cold smoking facilities as well as automated and manual filleting lines. A trading partnership with Cumbrian Seafoods started in 1999, and the company became part of the group in 2002.

Border Laird, Amble

Border Laird’s main activities are the production of fresh and frozen whole scampi and king scallops. The shellfish processed and sold from the site at Amble, Northumberland, is predominantly caught in local waters and supplemented from the west coast in the spring and summer months. Supported by refrigerated transport links to the factory, processing is undertaken seven days a week, ensuring that the shellfish is handled quickly to maintain freshness and quality before being distributed to customers throughout Europe. It also enjoys efficiencies from manufacturing cores for our nationally renowned coated fishcakes processed at the Seaham site.
